Meet Mike Johnson

Mike and son Ben on an Oregon hilltop.

Mike traces his love of writing to his late dad Ralph's decision to begin subscribing to the Cleveland Plain Dealer in their hometown of Shelby, Ohio. At that time, in the mid-1950s when Mike was a wee lad, The Plain Dealer had a columnist named Gordon Cobbledick. Mike quickly grew to admire Cobbledick's mastery of the written word.

During high school, Mike wrote for both the school newspaper and The Shelby Daily Globe.

At Ohio University, Mike was taking a course called History of the English Language. The professor who taught it was as dry as desert sands. The course had a saving grace, though. It was there he met Lynne, his wife since 1969. They have three kids, Andrea, Zach and Ben.

After 35 years in the corporate world, Mike retired from The Timken Company in late 2003 as vice president-communications.

His global responsibilities included external and internal communications, media relations, financial communications, branding and corporate identity, marketing communications and advertising.
Before coming to Timken, he worked with TRW Inc. from 1979 to 1990, most recently as director of communications. Earlier, Mike worked with General Electric and Industry Week magazine.

While in the military, he served in Korea as a public affairs and liaison specialist and an Army correspondent.

He is an alumnus of Ohio University's E.W. Scripps School, Marshall College of Law at Cleveland State University, and Stanford Universitys Graduate School of Business.

For 13 years, Mike was a member of the National Association of Manufacturers Communications Council which he twice chaired. During the same period, he also twice chaired the American Iron & Steel Institutes Strategic Communications Council. For six years, he served on the board of the Cleveland-Northern Ohio Chapter of the National Investor Relations Institute. Twice for a total of 14 years, he served as a 'big brother' in the Big Brothers of America program. For 20 years, he coached youth sports teams.

Mike is at 209 Campus Ave., S.E., North Canton, OH 44720.
